If you’d have asked me what my career choice was as a kid, photography would not have been my first option—it wasn’t something I thought I’d have the opportunity to grow into more than just a hobby.  

I went to school for and got a Bachelor’s in psychology, and moved to Sydney for a year. That’s where I picked up my first camera as an excuse to explore a new city. This re-ignited a love for photography I’ve had since I was a kid. Music would be the next step in my journey. 

When I came back to Montreal I started taking pictures for bands some friends were in and fell in love with music photography. A couple years later I got a job as a professional photo editor and learned a lot from my colleagues and the photographers I was working with. That was the élan I needed to expand into other kinds of photography. 

Events came first, and they were definitely an interesting change of pace from concert and music photography. The general principles were the same: capture the important moments and feel of the event. The biggest difference for me was being able to interact with people—you don’t get to do much of that when you’re taking pictures of people on stage. I wanted to give people seeing the pictures a believable idea of what it was like to be there, and event photography was perfect for that. 

On the other hand, portraits were a completely different beast. Working in a studio, having full control of the lighting, and being able to direct people were all new skills I was excited to learn.
